PROJECT 1
The Body, the Cube, and the Mark!
Due date: 4/18 or 4/20
(7) Analysis due: midnight *
Build a box from wood. You may determine the size and the amount. It is your stage. When you mount, your “performance” starts. When you dismount, it ends. You don’t need to worry about the bookends of this piece, they are predetermined. This construction should generate movement or a situation. While considering the works shown in lecture as well as the readings, create a an event. You may use your body, your voice, a prop or two, costuming, mark making tools, etc. Exercise minimalism in your approach; less is more. You may bring in additional materials to the piece, but the main medium must be your body and the box. Presentation is still part of the content of this project, but please play first. Consider muscle or cultural memory and identity as a conceptual underpinning.
_________
> Exercises:
(1) (3) (4) (5) (5a) (6)
> Considerations:
> Must have:
- quality construction (add a finish and sand it - hardware showing is ok)
- an action of some kind
- a list of 10 different ideas/material considerations
- visual evidence of a happening/occurrence
- a score
*Document many steps in your process and actions for your analysis. This may mean that you set up a camera and record. Bring this recording in case we all want to see it during your critique.
Artists in Lecture/Notes:
Oskar Schlemmer / Tom Marioni / Bruce Nauman / Henry Moore / Stuart Brisley / Rebecca Horn / Dennis Oppenheim / Minoru Hirata / Charles Ray / Janine Antoni / Yves Klein / Carolee Schneemann / Brad Thiele / Matthew Barney / Robert Morris / Simone Forti /
